Trying to understand Sookshmadarshini? Jumped into it (without knowing anything). Why, you ask?🤪

Why did an Odia girl, who's a Hindi Rj & dubbing artist for female leads in movies in Mumbai, (does not understand Malayalam), choose Sookshmadarshini to watch with family?

Trailer. Whoever did the trailer on Jiohotstar knows. As a marketing MBAšŸ„‡+ higher šŸŽ“ in Marketing, let me tell you this trailer was a 1000 times better than the youtube one (both Malayalam & Hindi). And if you love spoiler free twists & turns, just watch Sookshmadarshini without any context. Available in 5 languages & English subtitles.(Disney+ Hotstar, Zee5, and Airtel Xstream Play in India, with international availability on Simply South, and potentially through Hulu's Hotstar hub in the US, offering it in multiple languages including Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada). Little warning: Can be a bif dark, but all good in the end.

What happened in Sookshmadarshini?

What just happened? There are some movies you watch that you just can't be ok after, without talking about it. Yeah, bad move to start it at 11.30 in the night. So, after 2am, we were all tossing in bed, thinking about what we just saw.

Rj Mrunmayee Manaja explaining the Sookshmadarshini Malayalam movie ending with Nazriya Nazim, Basil Joseph and full spoiler discussion

What does Sookshmadarshini mean?

Sookshmadarshini means the exact same in my language, Odia. A girl who can see things others can't.  English subtitles said 'microscope'. No super power. Just Sherlock Holmes or Shekhar Holmes, Miss Marple or Poirot level observation prowess.

I am no Sookshmadarshini, btw. So, my over analysis skills won't help me here. Also, my dear Mallus, don't come for me. I've no idea who these actors are. To me, they are the characters. Absolute objective audience, you got, ah. I had however seen the man in Jaya Jaya Hey, I think. Lovely movie. Will add their names later.

Why I decided to watch Sookshmadarshini instantly sold

A whatsapp group of all girls in neighbourhood pops on screen. One is perched on a window taajaa/chhajja(that thing outside windows) & others are losing their mind, panicking, dying inside, constantly on a concallšŸ˜…, probably doing something crazy. It just sets that mystery. Looks fun. Maybe comedy, I thought.

Plot beginning BEFORE Spoilers start

Priya is a middle class house wife in lush homes like we used to have, what seems ancient past to us East or West Indians who live in concrete cities now. Think single houses. Greenery, baadi bagichā. ବାଔ଼ି ବଗିଚା — garden in your own compound. But do you REALLY KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOUR?

Kinda scary, right? New neighbours move in. They're all mad happy.

Let's discuss. Full spoiler breakdown of Sookshmadarshini’s twist endingNazriya NazimBasil Joseph — Rj Mrunmayee Manaja

After watching Sookshmadarshini, you go through that uncomfortable rabbit hole of internet because you want answers. It's not adding up. Brain isn't braining. And, from 2am to what probably was the entire night I read others opinions too. Wishing someone would have analyzed Sookshmadarshini.

Sookshmadarshini Analysis

Did priya die in Sookshmadarshini?

No. It's a happy ending. Relax.

Did Manuel (Basil really feed that monitor lizard Udumbu to his neighbours in party in Sookshmadarshini

Yes. Manuel had a serious superiority complex. He does underestimate the neighbours. In flashback in the end, it is clearly shown how he tells the family that this neighbourhood is good because, well, he thinks they are too stupid to figure it out. Since the day he came, he has been constantly observing the neighbours. Testing them. Also, notice how Manuel says "I've a fast". He does not eat. Because this meat is beneath him. But he does feed it to the low commoners who are so naive they wouldn't even guess it. And they don't. Thus proving his point, and adding to his over confidence that he will succeed. Only Priya who's been using her brain literally suspects and says it out loud in the kitchen. Did he? Did he not? This is essentially what the writer, director wanted us to feel.

Everywhere we hear in history nobody ate or drank what the host won't. Seriously HOW innocent were these men that they didn't even once wonder why he threw a party ON the day of his fast?

“Did Manuel really serve udumbu at the party?” — A still from *Sookshmadarshini*, the Malayalam thriller starring Basil Joseph and Nazriya Nazim

Reddit also said it can't be red herring because you're distracting from what? Exactly. If you show a plot situation and then bring a twist, like say, if Manuel is innocent indeed. Then we the viewers along with Priya feel stupid we doubted Manuel could feed the udumbu to neighbours by lying it's a meat they eat, only because we saw him catch it and kill it.

Was Manuel a miser?

They went on about Manuel not being a miser. He did gift that entire cake AND got them a gift too in the wedding anniversary party. But can we trust anything Manuel did as truly reflective of his personality? He was literally posing to be the nicest man alive so they don't doubt him. He even succeded, didn't he? Priya's husband was not believing her because he'd not doubt Manuel. His reasoning was serious foreshadowing though. Come to think of it they did give a clue. One redditor had said a movie is truly a suspense if they give us all clues and we still cannot figure it out. Husband does say the way he hugged his Ammachi (mother), there's no way—but we were seeing from Priya's eyes.

Signs of Manuel being cruel

We knew he'd hit a cat with a stone with such slow, diabolical aiming and this entire animal thing.

Now, comes the question is Manuel a psychopath?

One redditor had a point that he can't be a psychopath because he does have love for his mother. Another said but that level of love itself is serious concern of mental illness. Was it societal pressure, obligation and devotion and blind obeying of whatever was asked?

But a psychopath does not feel ANY emotion. Right? Aren't they apathetic? Full of apathy? They just can't feel? But here was Manuel who felt the most possible for his mother. Such blind devotion.

Sookshmadarshini Ending Explained

So, Priya starts doubting Manuel noticing his cruel actions, trying to save his mother from him. She sees Ammachi in that room, that night. Definitely, a cry for help? The women gang spy on them. They notice the blood stains outside the house, then covered up with fresh paint. All hidden behind the sacks. Trespassing in their neighbour's property is also repeatedly caught. Pretty embarassing. Manuel even threatens he will complain to her husband. We, the innocent  audience are really scared for Ammachi, and would do anything for her well-being just like Priya, and the other women in the village. Like a classic case of caretakers like children or husband harming the woman, Ammachi needed to be rescued from this hell. And we are so relieved when Ammachi actually comes back alive.

What happened when they were guarding Ammachi?

The juice was drugged. But who drugged it?

We are shown clear visuals of Manuel, actually adding something to the mango, milkshake or juice near the mixie to kill or sedate. This lady he's leading on is the guard. Everything was going as for plan. But then Priya enters. She consumes the same juice. We are dead scared, she's going to die. Manuel calls Priya's husband and asks for that phone number of the caretaker. An urgent cry for help to somehow get her out of the house. He succeeds. Priya has to go back to her own house to look for it.
Manuel has the girl in his trap, so she would not believe Priya. But when he blames her for carelessness, ghosts her completely and does not talk to her at all, eventually she also starts suspecting, and then she's also with Priya.

Is Manuel the real villain of Sookshmadarshini

No.
Then who is? That comes out of nowhere because of this red herring, that has been set up so far.

If Ammachi was murdered who came back from the Ashram?

We start to think maybe it's some other lady that they are trying to pause as the murdered victim to prove that she has not been murdered.Maybe it's a twin or a look alike. Priya is definitely suspicious as she had completely believed that Ammachi was killed. She even manages to sneak in and tell her that she could confide in her and doesn't need to be afraid of anybody.

The victim murdered was NOT Ammachi

All this while we see the blood. We see the entire house covered with polythene, serious chemicals — all sorts of acids to melt the bones, etc. to get rid of every a bit of evidence. So that nobody is able to figure out, because, of course, they didn't think that the women can be this intelligent to even come close to solving this mystery. But here was Priya. We are seeing this through her eyes and we are fooled, just as she is, at every step of the way.

Who was murdered in Sookshmadarshini?

Whose dead body was it?

The daughter's.

Who did they see thinking Grace is alive and left?

Ammachi herself dresses as Grace in a staged exit to convince everyone that Grace returned safely. The real Grace never actually walks that path; she is murdered secretly by the family before the staged scene.
Priya and the women are tricked into thinking Grace is alive because they see Ammachi in Grace’s clothes, and Manuel controls phone calls and timing to maintain the illusion.
It only shows movement from a distance so the audience registers that someone left, not who left.Every “evidence” the audience sees — the exit, the song, the phone calls — is part of a carefully staged cover-up, ensuring the crime looks like Grace returned safely.

Real reason for the murder

The daughter of the family went abroad and chose a woman. So that was blasphemous for the matriarch of the family. She would not tolerate. And essentially ordered to get her own daughter killed as punishment for wanting to marry a woman and adopt a child, before this news could spread in the village. A classic case of honour killing. How can a mother be so apathetic to literally murder her own child that she gave birth to and raised only because of honor is troubling and difficult to understand for us. But that's what it is in the story of the universe. So, the devoted family obeys Ammachi and comes up with this really messed up plan for the murder. Because this was no normal murder.

The trap to get the victim was set very nicely. The daughter knew that her mother and the family would be really angry with her.So she would have never come back. But that video message of a mother, really emotional asking her to come back is what made her come back to india. They killed her but took her from another side exit. The lady going out was actually the mother but dressed as the daughter. So that they are made to believe that she's still alive. A phone was with Manuel all along. So the brother himself was answering all the calls. Every time priya thought she was alerting the sister, she was actually talking to the brother.
